Types of Eating Disorders
Eating disorders involve serious disturbances in eating behavior, such as extreme and unhealthy reduction of food intake or severe overeating, as well as feelings of distress or extreme concern about body shape or weight.
Eating disorders are not due to a failure of will or behavior, rather, they are real, treatable medical illnesses in which certain maladaptive patterns of eating take on a life of their own.
The main types of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder.
Signs and Symptoms
BULIMIA NERVOSA
•
Recurrent episodes of binge eating, characterized by eating an excessive amount of food within a discrete period of time and by a sense of lack of control over eating during the episode.
•
Recurrent inappropriate compensatory behavior in order to prevent weight gain, such as self-induced vomiting, or misuse of laxatives, diuretics, enemas, or other medications (purging), fasting, or excessive exercise.
•
The binge eating and inappropriate compensatory behaviors both occur at least twice a week for 3 months.
Because purging or other compensatory behavior follows the binge eating episodes, people with bulimia usually weigh within the normal range for their age and height. However, like individuals with anorexia, they may fear gaining weight, desire to lose weight, and feel intensely dissatisfied with their bodies. People with bulimia often perform the behaviors in secrecy, feeling disgusted and ashamed when they binge, yet relieved once they purge.

Treatment Strategies
According to NEDA (National Eating Disorders Association), the most effective outpatient treatment for an eating disorder is some form of psychotherapy coupled with careful attention to medical and nutritional needs. Ideally, this treatment needs to be tailored to the individual and will vary according to the disorder's severity and the client’s individual problems, needs, and strengths.
Our outpatient eating disorder treatment programs in California offer specialized care for anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorders, to name a few. With compassionate therapists and virtual therapy options, we provide tailored treatment plans to support individuals on their journey to recovery.
In the Intensive Outpatient program provided by New Directions Eating Disorders Center, we provide small group sessions by a licensed clinician specializing in eating disorders, and we also provide the services of a nutritionist and will refer to an M.D. psychiatrist when appropriate. Counseling addresses both the eating disorder symptoms and the psychological, interpersonal, and cultural forces that contribute to the eating disorder.
We offer family sessions that include significant others as well as family members and encourage their participation in the recovery process. We also coordinate care with the family physician to ensure that the client is medically stable and can benefit from an intensive outpatient program.
Whether you're seeking intensive therapy or ongoing support, our eating disorder treatment and virtual binge eating disorder treatment programs are designed to meet your unique needs and promote long-term healing.
